Re: Hello
I don't think I'll ever be able to put down the Greek NT so I might as well keep improving. Welcome Eden. My money would always be on the one who 'won't ever be able to put down the Greek NT' versus one who plods all the way through a grammar book, but doesn't develop a real engagement with the lan...

Re: BDAG needed with Strong's Greek Dictionary?
I got my hardcover edition for around $10, and you can find copies for about that price . Some of those links point to a PDF, make sure you are getting a printed book if that's what you want. Yes, the layout is different. It's out of copyright, I wish someone would create a free Kindle edition or a...

Re: BDAG needed with Strong's Greek Dictionary?
For comparison, here is the same word in Abbott-Smith . I have not seen this one before. I really like the layout and the coverage for entry level or quick reference. So easy to scan a word for essential information and quite impressive list of Biblical references for the different expressions of e...

Yes, And you can get it on Kindle for $31, which is still a bit expensive but getting closer to reasonable. Very handy to have it electronically too, depending on personal habits and setup.Eeli Kaikkonen wrote:Something like Danker's Concise lexicon. But it's too expensive for its size and target audience.

Re: BDAG needed with Strong's Greek Dictionary?
On the thread question, yes, you need BDAG. To be more precise, the question is: ... as a new student of NT Greek. Can anyone think of why I might need BDAG as well as what I have? I think you would find relatively few NEW students beginning with a lexicon like BDAG. While there may be some benefit...

Re: BDAG needed with Strong's Greek Dictionary?
The pronunciation system described in Strong's and in Zodhiates is Erasmian. Like many others, I had the experience of hearing and reading Erasmian for the first few years only to find as I got more and more familiar with it that it has a choppy and unnatural sound. (I understand from Greek-speaking...

Re: BDAG needed with Strong's Greek Dictionary?
I agree with all of Jonathan's advice, and especially about a grammar like Funk and a good lexicon. Funk is especially good. I also agree that you will need BDAG as you begin to get past the basics. My own personal experience with BDAG though, was that it sat on the shelf for a year or two until I g...

Re: Koine Greek Reader, questions arising
Rodney Decker writes: 'The phrase παρέδωκεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν αμορραῖον ὑποχείριον ισραηλ sounds clumsy in formal English translation: "God delivered the subordinate Amorite to Israel"; it is often translated, "God delivered the Amorite into the hand of Israel" - which reflects the Heb...
