Re: Significant αι /ε interchanges?
as a second post this morning (don't miss the one above) and coming back to one of Stephen's examples (and the others should probably be discussed individually, too): Gal 3:3 οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε, ἐναρξάμενοι πνεύματι νῦν σαρκί ἐπτιτελεῖσθαι (“Are you, who got started in the spirit, so senseless as to...

Re: Significant αι /ε interchanges?
Hey, that was pretty nifty to start a new topic and to get the old posts included. ὦ χαῖρε Στέφανε! Don't forget about 1 Thes 5:1: περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν κερῶν, ἀδελφοὶ... "Now, concerning times and horns, brethren..." It would be even more fun to do this with iotacisms, e.g. 1 Thes. 5...

Re: Seminary exegesis classes
The purpose of seminary is to train ministers to minister, not to train Greek-speakers... unless the students will be ministering to Greek-speakers of course... Susan, you miss the point of the speaking. Speaking Greek is to make for GOOD READING and more efficient pedagogy. So I hear you saying th...

Re: Seminary exegesis classes
Wow, maybe German and French literature classes could use this method if they really wanted to get deep into the meaning of the text!
Not.

Re: ἡ ὑποπροφορά
It might be nice to repost under something like "significant exegesis with AI and E".
YPOPROFORA doesn't do this justice.

Re: ἡ ὑποπροφορά
Did you want to go ahead and filter these yourself, or do you want others to explain?
E.g. Gal 3.3 is clear in context and clearly 'you' [εστε], since ανοητοι is m.pl.,
regardless of how spelled by mss A F G 104 εσται.

Re: ἡ ὑποπροφορά
In the real world of multilingual communication the phoneme is the goal. A second language learner needs to practice until they land in the 'phoneme' area of the sound that they are aiming for. Certain broadstrokes can also be 'cleaned up' with lots of good listening, and good imitation. E.g., with ...

Re: Machen Erasmian: kinds of Erasmian and kinds of Restored
I'll look forward to meeting you in Fresno. Some of the difficulties that you describe are typical for 'five-vowel' languages. However, practice over a month or so, and lots of listening to the target sounds can get anyone over the hurdle if they want to. Incidently, modern Greek is five-vowel. AI=E...

Re: Buth and diacritic marks/accents
A couple of clarifications might help the above. 1. The 9th century miniscule revolution in texts did not "maintain" the three accents, but ADDED them. They were not being pronounced in the 9th c.. This is what is confusing though. If they weren't pronouncing the accents....then why were ...

Mark: 1Cor 13:13b. from the forthcoming A Doric Greek New Testament: μείζων δὲ τούτων ἁ ἀγάπα . Let's not get too silly. You know you can't mix Doric and "pop-Erasmian": you'll have a situation of τὸ αἰνεῖν τὰν θεάν ! I mean τὸν θεόν. Oh dear, :? you'll need to leave the dark forc...
