Re: Telicity of ἐλθεῖν (ἕρχομαι)?
Stephen, As for me I'm working my way through the works you referenced, but I recently read a paper written by Tony Pope in 1984 dealing with verbs of motion in Mark, which was eye opening for me. http://www.sil.org/acpub/repository/START12.pdf Your discussion has brought to mind the translation of...

Re: Who does their main bible reading in Greek?
I read a paragraph of the NT in Greek for my devotions. I've been using Wallace's reading order (but not his 3-pass, 3 chapters per day method), with the assistance of Sakae Kubo's Reader's Lexicon.

Re: Verb catalog - lexical aspect
- In trying to salvage a definition-based model, would it be reasonable then to talk about more and less cancellable values, rather than cancellable and uncancellable? And to assign them a strength, rather than a +/- value? (ranging from +10 to -10, for example)? I'm not sure it's worth salvaging. ...

Re: Are there 4 word in Greek for love / to love?
I'm fortunate in that my minister had some time in Classical Greek before studying for the ministry (and had done Latin throughout high school -- even starting "fights" (prearranged staged things) on the sporting field so as to be sent inside to do more Latin). So he has a grip on this, an...

Re: Verb catalog - lexical aspect
Hmm. So, I've read the Wikipedia page on Prototype Theory. This prompts questions: - In trying to salvage a definition-based model, would it be reasonable then to talk about more and less cancellable values, rather than cancellable and uncancellable? And to assign them a strength, rather than a +/- ...

Re: Verb catalog - lexical aspect
Hmm. What if there were a way of increasing the valence of each attribute, so that rather than being just + or -, there were also a symbol to say something like "it's complex -- see the attached text", and also a way of attaching text to the attributes.

Re: Aktionsart
I guess that explains why I always struggled with the idea of Aktionsart then. I'd be happy to replace it, as long as we use different terms for the different meanings it had :). OK, I think I see your distinction between pragmatics and semantics-in-context, and I agree that, as you're using the ter...

Re: Verb catalog - lexical aspect
Thanks. (I'm assuming polysemy = multiple meanings). So does that mean that for a polysemous word, each meaning would have to have its own lexical attributes?

https://sites.google.com/a/sheffield.ac.uk/all-about-linguistics/branches/discourse-analysis Discourse Analysis has (at least) 3 meanings, which are defined at the link above. I tend to use the first meaning, but that's because my interests lean that way. It seems to me that use 1 could align with s...
