Re: Eph 2:4 ἠγάπησεν
Firstly it is you who misunderstood my statement, because I wasn't creating anything you call a straw-man. I was in fact suggesting that you were taking BDAG too literally if it says "show love" as a sense, even as you have now confirmed it by telling me that it cites 2 Sam 13:15. I have ...

Re: Eph 2:4 ἠγάπησεν
In my dialect of English, "to love a love" isn't really English, certainly not idiomatic English. It has to be interpretated rather than calqued. If you're proposing "to have love for" rather than "to show love for" then you should explain why BDAG got it wrong. Also, ...

Re: Eph 2:4 ἠγάπησεν
OK. Consulting BDAG ἀγαπάω 2, it seems that this verb with the cognate accusative ἀγάπαν is an idiom that means "to show love." (Another example is John 17:26). In our case, the phrase διὰ τὴν πολλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς has two accusatives for ἠγάπησεν, so something idiomatic is...

Re: Greek Style
Style is something that is both obvious and hard to define. My sense is that there have been several different ways of dealing with it. One is to compare how the texts of the NT and compare them with contemporary standards of rhetorical style. I'm thinking of the work Hans Dieter Betz has done for G...

Re: Eph 2:4 ἠγάπησεν
I'm not sure if I understand you two right, but both of you seem to be saying that ἠγάπησεν means performing an act of love, rather than having a loving feeling, right? I'd confirm that this is how I would read it. We could render it as "showed his love." I would take it as conceptually p...

Eph 2:4 ἠγάπησεν
I am continuing my examination of verbal aspect, and now I wish to pose this question. 4 ὁ δὲ θεὸς πλούσιος ὢν ἐν ἐλέει, διὰ τὴν πολλὴν ἀγάπην αὐτοῦ ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς, 5 καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπώμασιν συνεζωοποίησεν τῷ Χριστῷ .... But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with whi...

Re: Rev. 4:11 (Codex Vaticanus)?
The "B" mentioned in some older editions of Revelation is now known as 046 to avoid confusion. It is also a Vatican manuscript, but dating from the 10th century.

Re: Prepositions
Hi Mike, the meaning of prepositions is highly context dependent. Sometimes different prepositions have distinct meanings; sometimes they overlap.

Re: Rev. 4:11 (Codex Vaticanus)?
Mike, we have a forum rule that if you want to talk about Greek text, you have to post the Greek, either in Unicode or in the old-style B-Greek transliteration.
This rule is to prevent wild goose chases for those helpful people trying to respond.
