Re: Romans 3:12 - Substantival Participle

Hi Robert, This looks like a place where knowing Greek might go some way towards clarifying the rather vague word "good" that seems to carry over from bonus into English translations. Aside from context-cotext or others exegesical techniques that one could bring to the passage, from a linguistic poi...

Re: ὄνομά μοι ... τὸ ὄνομά μου

πηλίκος ἦσθ᾽ ὅθ᾽ ὁ Μῆδος ἀφίκετο; LSJ gives the meaning for πηλίκος as "how great" or "how large," which leads me to think that πηλίκος εἶ; is similar to how we ask a child "so, how big are you now?" expecting them to respond with their age ("I'm this big!" or "I'm this many!" holding up three fing...

Re: ὄνομά μοι ... τὸ ὄνομά μου

It other words, it seems that we should be asking πηλικὸς εἶ; how old are you? and responding with ἐτῶν Χ εἰμί I am of x years. That πηλίκος (note the accent) seems to be a conglomerant, along the lines of adding a "wh-" to the the front and number-case ending at the end of the of ἡλικ-ία in the se...

Re: Croy 1999 vs 2011

On this age of houses making minor tweaks to the textbooks they publish, calling it a new edition to boost sales, I applaud Eerdman's idea of reprinting the older volume, while at the same time giving supplementary material in .pdf format. Even the originally purchased edition increases in value.

The case and the time-frame allows that this may be the medieval word ἔξοδον, τὸ, meaning "expense", the money that is required or desired to be paid on something.
