Re: Leviticus 23:11 - πρώτης
Thanks for the fantastic link, Mr. Penner. It appears that της πρωτης hasn't been added in any manuscript to Leviticus 23:15, therefore, in my opinion, demonstrating that the scribes of 29, 68′, 319, & AethCRa either had access to Septuagint manuscripts that had της πρωτης των σαββατων in them, ...

Re: Etymological New Testament
Would you have guessed that θεός "literally" means "Placer" (from the root of τίθημι)? Well, neither would I. I was in the midst of reading Greek Apologists of the Second Century by Robert M. Grant, and as he mentioned something about this, it reminded me of this thread. I had n...

Re: Leviticus 23:11 - πρώτης
Thanks for the verse reference, Mr. Penner. Well, I'd essentially think that τῇ ἐπαύριον τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας is an elongated way of saying "the next day". But that certainly is the closest looking parallel, although it has nothing to do with the feasts in Leviticus 23. Seems like NETS has ha...

Leviticus 23:11 - πρώτης
I was looking at the Septuagint's rendition of Leviticus 23:11: καὶ ἀνοίσει τὸ δράγμα ἔναντι κυρίου δεκτὸν ὑμῖν, τῇ ἐπαύριον τῆς πρώτης ἀνοίσει αὐτὸ ὁ ἱερεύς - and just couldn't quite fathom as to what πρώτης could be referring to. C. Brenton translates it as "first [day]", but I just don'...

Re: Gal 1:4 ὑπὲρ / περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν
Paul consistently uses ὑπὲρ as in 1 Cor 15:3, 2 Cor 5:21, Gal 1:4. John has settled for περὶ and it may well be that the small distinction was lost over time. The variant περὶ in Gal 1:4 appears to be a later adjustment to such a change in usage. I don't want to bring this into a discussion on text...

1 Cor 7:19 - "Circumcision" or "The Circumcision"?
ἡ περιτομὴ οὐδέν ἐστιν καὶ ἡ ἀκροβυστία οὐδέν ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ τήρησις ἐντολῶν θεοῦ. H PERITOMH OUDEN ESTIN KAI H AKROBUSTIA OUDEN ESTIN, ALLA THRESIS ENTOLVN QEOU. Looking at this verse today, I was wondering if there was anything in the Greek text that could help deduce whether this is, as what's been ...

Re: ancient Greek MSS -- if not texts, then pictures?
Well for many of the New Testament manuscripts, there's the University of Munster pages such as http://nttranscripts.uni-muenster.de/AnaServer?NTtranscripts+0+start.anv which contains transcriptions of a lot of the manuscripts. But then there's also http://intf.uni-muenster.de/vmr/NTVMR/ListeHandsch...

Re: Nomina Sacra
I've never thought about them like that, Mr. Finney. Whilst I certainly would expect that to work for names like Jesus/Ιησους and titles like Christ/Χριστος, would that necessarily therefore also go onto include God/θεος and Lord/Κυριος, both of which were most certainly spoken by non-Christians as ...

Re: Nomina Sacra
I'd add the Book "Encountering the Manuscripts: An Introduction to New Testament Paleography & Textual Criticism" by Philip Comfort to Mr Penner's list. He has a whole chapter of the book dedicated to a discussion on the NS, pp. 199-254. I'd also recommend Larry Hurtado's blog at http:...
