Understanding the usage of +/- in linguistic papers?
I have noticed that Randall Buth, Porter, and others like to describe the grammar of the verb using a particular formula, for example, I see Porter do it on page 9 of his monograph, writing [+aspectual / +finite: -assertion +direction] and assuming people know what it means. (Is it defined later in ...

Narrative, direct discourse, indirect discourse, and authorial discourse.
Campbell in his ‘Basics of Verbal Aspect’ and his more detailed monograph frequently delineates between Narrative text, and text that is a form of discourse. (For example, parts of his argument depend on statistical analysis applied to the various types of categories.) I recognise that delineating b...

Rendering imperfective into English (an English question?)
When Campbell introduces imperfective aspect with the helicopter/parade illustration and the “walk ing ” illustration it leaves me with the impression that “ing” is essentially a key means of communicating the imperfective aspect, but then I notice in Campbell’s first example in his introductory boo...

Re: Ezekiel 3:2a
That's correct. I somehow have lots of modules in Accordance called LXX-something.... but I don't know the history of them and didn't realize there was a difference (in the Greek).
Why is this version different to the others?

Ezekiel 3:2a
How would you translate this? καὶ διήνοιξεν τὸ στόμα μου, ... NETS translates it: And I opened wide my mouth, ... Perhaps I am reading too late at night to concentrate but I read it as And my mouth opened, ... Where does the I come from? It's there in the Hebrew but I can't work out where it comes f...

Re: LXX Solomon 17:22
By the way, its an honour to meet someone who has done published translation of this text. I notice that you translate v26 "to crush all their support with an iron rod", in contrast to NETS which has a slightly less clear v24 "to shatter all their substance with an iron rod" Was ...

Re: LXX Solomon 17:22
FWIW, my translation in the Lexham English Septuagint is "And undergird him with strength to shatter unrighteous rulers. " I was not aware of this resource. I have a few pulled up next to the greek in Accordance, however most of them are in fairly old English. It would be nice to have som...

Re: Didache 12:1 and Commentary?
Thanks, thats a silly mistake.Just one quibble with the translation: ἕξετε is future.
The left-hand toilet wiping thing is not something I had associated with biblical times! Interesting, I will have to look into that.

LXX Solomon 17:22
Im having trouble with the articular infinitive below, from verse 22: καὶ ὑπόζωσον αὐτὸν ἰσχὺν τοῦ θραῦσαι ἄρχοντας ἀδίκους, Duff seems to imply that τοῦ θραῦσαι becomes a noun of sorts, i.e. perhaps: And gird him (with) strength for smashing unrighteous rulers But Lightfoot translates it as an actu...

Didache 12:1 and Commentary?
Hi Everyone, First my specific question: 12:1 Πᾶς δὲ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου δεχθήτω. ἔπειτα δὲ δοκιμάσαντες αὐτὸν γνώσεσθε σύνεσιν γὰρ ἕξετε δεξιὰν καὶ ἀριστεράν. It seems that there are some interesting variations on how to translate certain passages in the Didache. Does this seem reasonable...
