Re: ... what any fifth-form boy forgets at his peril
The subject of the infinitive is not expressed but its agent is the subject of ὀφείλει.There is no need to express a subject of an infinitive with ὀφείλει when they are coreferential. IIRC, Moulton's rule has to do with the case of predicate nominals of infinitives without an express subject. The r...

Re: Matthew 6.8 "before you ask him"
I also would not go quite so far as Jonathan's humorous suggestion. Sometimes a commentary may have an egregious mistake or two, but still have lots of other helpful information. As with everything, we read with discernment. Your instinct to ask about it is a good sign that you are learning some Gre...

Ha! I call your Abbott-Smith and raise you one BDAG: φύσις, εως, ἡ (φύω; Hom.+) ① condition or circumstance as determined by birth, natural endowment/condition, nature, esp. as inherited fr. one’s ancestors, in contrast to status or characteristics that are acquired after birth (Isocr. 4, 105 φύσει ...

Re: Topic - Focus John 2:4b Jesus' reply
I'm wondering how I got along all these years without all this stuff. However, for the line from Sophocles, I don't think it's correct to say that there is no main verb. What is understood of course is ἐστί...

Re: Romans 6:1 - Subjunctive ἐπιμένωμεν
From a text critical point of view, I think the subjunctive would be considered the more difficult reading. I have always taken this as a deliberative subjunctive and a rhetorical question, but I think seeing it as a hortatory subjunctive and a rhetorical statement would have the same effect.

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ λέγων σοι, Δός μοι πιεῖν, σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν Transferring this structure to English directly we get, "If you had know ..., you would have ...". I think the most common (the "normal&...

Re: Future in the past (II) ἤθελεν παρελθεῖν Mark 6:48
Even while we are considering that μελλειν (+ present infinitive) construction in the narrative past , perhaps I could bring this up too, καὶ εἶδεν αὐτοὺς βασανιζομένους ἐν τῷ ἐλαύνειν ἦν γὰρ ὁ ἄνεμος ἐναντίος αὐτοῖς καὶ περὶ τετάρτην φυλακὴν τῆς νυκτὸς ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσση...

Re: Quoting bible verse in biblical greek
Thank you for your answer. One thing thing I'll point out is that in ancient times, there was no convention for citing biblical books. They might say something like εν περιοχη του ευαγγελιου κατα Μαρκον, "in a passage of the gospel according to Mark" or ως Παυλος εγραψεν "As Paul wro...
