Re: βλασφημοῦντες

Mike, in the future, please remember that it's a requirement when discussing Greek from a particular passage to quote that passage.

Thanks...

Re: Matt 26:51 τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, the high priest's s

I find the Greek definite article a lot more intimate / immediate than a definition like that (can) describes. For example John 14:26 "Καὶ ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα" The feeling is much more intimate than just known to a reasonable speaker in a discourse context. In these cases, it is almost...

Re: Dative of means being used with a personal agent

This is very similar to the thread I tried to start on Eph 5:18 which kept getting sidetracked on whether or not the passive voice really exists and the proper terminology to describe it. I lean towards a dative of agent in these texts to, but am still wondering if the use of the preposition is simp...

Re: Word play on "Paul" in James 3:16?

As Moises Silva used to tell us, if you find something in the text that's very clever, and that nobody or few others have noticed before, then it's you being clever, and not the author of the text. I personally feel that this is highly improbable, to the point of almost certainly not...

Re: Semantic range of καθώς / ὡς

Well, the short answer is that καθώς is used mostly for comparison sorts of statements, and ὡς not only for comparison, but a whole host of other things. Really, the lexicons should be of great help here.

Re: Personal Pronoun Agreement?

Here we have a case where grammatical analysis will not give any help, in my opinion. The only satisfying solution is to conclude that 1 Tim 3:16 is a citation of an earlier formed hymnic or creedal passage. That would account for the masculine relative pronoun. This solution was proposed by Eduard...

Re: σαυτοῦ

ῥυθμίζειν ἀνάγκην ἔχεις· διὰ τοῦτο κεφαλὴ εἶ σύ. Οὐκοῦν ῥύθμιζε, τὸ σαυτοῦ ποίει. Wayne Grudem says that Chrysostom is here speaking to the woman, that she is the head of her maidservant and needs to train and restrain her. It seems to me that it must be the husband who is being addressed, since σα...
