Re: Most Commonly Used Beginning Greek Grammars?
One publication that talked about Greek textbooks is no longer published, the publication Classical World . It seems this publication ended in 2009, but see http://caas-cw.org/wp/ for further links - not sure these are the same sites. Here is a link to some of the Classical World publications: http:...

Re: Mark 15:2 συ λέγεις
Would we translate this as "So you say" with an emphasis on "you." Or would it be better to take it as "You said it, not me (I)"? Here is a couple of commentary comments. Word Biblical Commentary says nothing relevant. Cranfield in his commentary on Mark says to look at...

Re: Most Commonly Used Beginning Greek Grammars?
I believe one of the US association of classical groups keeps book statistics for both classical and NT Greek textbooks. That would be the place to start.

Re: μάχαιρα
Thanks Carl. When we were looking at female names in class, I was a bit confused by names like Ἰωάν(ν)α.This seems to be a productive ending for other female names also Ἰωάν(ν)α, ας, ἡ (on the spelling s. B-D-F §40; 53, 3) Joanna Lk 8:3; 24:10. Μάρθα, ας, ἡ (מָרְתָּא ‘mistress’; s. B-D-F §53, 3. Plu...

Re: Android support for polytonic Greek
So I went out and perhaps did something stupid. I picked up an LG Android tablet. Greek polytonic fonts appear fine in the Google Chrome browser. But I can only get a modern Greek keyboard to appear - there does not seem to be a polytonic Greek keyboard. Does anyone know if there is a polytonic Gree...

Re: Hellenistic Greek for the Modern World
Chris Servanti wrote I think the cause to raise Koine as a modern usable language won't ever work until there is a standardized full dictionary of everyday words, standardized pronunciation, and some people who are really REALLY good at Koine and can write let's say devotionals or newsletters in it....

Re: Middle Voice for the Future Tense
Wikipedia says the following (I've added the bold text): There were also a number of secondary formations, e.g. causative ("I had someone do something"), iterative/inceptive ("I did something repeatedly"/"I began to do something"), desiderative ("I want to do somet...

Re: Middle Voice for the Future Tense
Let's add the future of εἰμί into this discussion: ἔσομαι. I do not know the history of IE and proto-Greek. So when did this form begin to be used for the future? Did Indo-European have a future tense? My understanding is that the future came into Greek later in its development. What forms were used...

Re: Dearth of images ὑπολύω / ὑποδέω. Suggestions?
Thanks for this thread. Your verb pair is accurate. But it seems that the middle voice should be used for 'put on' most of the time and the active or middle for 'take off?. LJS lists the middle for ὑπολύω also. Mt, Mk, and John use the simplex (verb without preposition) λῦσαι for untying τὸν ἱμάντα ...
