Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία
I think it's a big question mark whether a noun derived from a verb would carry over any Aktionsart at all. I don't think this is rocket science or even a complicated linguistic or discourse issue. Look at the way the word is used both in its NT contexts and elsewhere. That's what the lexicographers...

Re: 1 John 5:16 possible with aorist?
I am writing with a question about 1 John 5:16: 16 ἐάν τις ἴδῃ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτάνοντα ἁμαρτίαν μὴ πρὸς θάνατον, αἰτήσει, καὶ δώσει αὐτῷ ζωήν, τοῖς ἁμαρτάνουσιν μὴ πρὸς θάνατον. ἔστιν ἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον· οὐ περὶ ἐκείνης λέγω ἵνα ἐρωτήσῃ. In 15a, the present participle of hamartano (ἁμαρτάνο...

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία
I suggest looking up each of the instances and asking the question "which usage sounds better in this context?" Rather than heading into the subjective unknown with that, let me suggest a method for doing it... Further to what I said 12 months ago about this noun (I would now add the word...

Re: Biblical greek for generic statements?
A brief question about generic statements in Biblical Greek- In colloquial English, we use "one" or "you" primarily for generic statements like "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". In Koine Greek, I have primarily seen the use of "a man&q...

Re: Logos vs logeo
Hello all, I am a very, very, VERY new beginner in koine Greek. I have a question: In First John 1:9, confess is homologeo (ὁμολογέω) , homo (ὁμοῦ) meaning same , logeo from logos(λόγος) , meaning word . My question is this: What does the the change from ὁ in logos to the έω in logeo indicate? In o...

Re: American hello from Leipzig, Germany
Erik, welcome. Being in love with Greek is a good thing. Forgetting Latin is not... But we'll forgive you since this is the B-Greek forum.

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία
Yes, of course, context usually serves as a determining factor in translation from any language. The reason why those questions were raised is that some persons argue that παρουσία should always be rendered as “ presence ” in the Greek Scriptures. I know of at least three Bible translations which r...

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία
Philippians 2:12: “Ωστε, ἀγαπητοί μου, καθὼς πάντοτε ὑπηκούσατε, μὴ ὡς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ μου μόνον, ἀλλὰ νῦν πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐν τῇ ἀπουσίᾳ μου, μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε.” The word παρουσία occurs 24 times in the Greek Scriptures. (Mt 24:3, 27, 37, 39; 1Co 15:23; 16:17; 2Co 7...

Doesn't look too bad. They are offering a free limited subscription until Dec 31st, 2015, with coupon code DC-TWK (I think, I can no longer find the facebook post where I got this). It looks pretty reasonable for a paid subscription site even so.

Re: A question about gender
Does the gender of a verb have to agree with the gender of the subject? For example, is δελεάζοντες masculine in 2 Peter 2:14 because ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (in 2 Peter 2:1) is masculine? Finite verbs (verbs which have person and number) are not marked for gender in Greek. δελεάζοντες, however, is a parti...
