Re: Mutual misperceptions
No, we really thought you were being funny... and I really thought you were being super-kind and helpful, but as it turns out, I am not as humorous as you thought, and ...   Sorry, I was only being kind and helpful, not super-. But of course, if everyone were super, no one would be....

From Lucian's De Morte Peregrini
I though it would be fun to revisit the text I did for my M.A. thesis back in the 1980's, Lucian's De Morte Peregrini . I think my Greek must have been better in those days, because I ran across a sentence for which I'd like people's opinion. From 1.3: τὸν μὲν ποιητὴν οἶσθα οἷός τε ἦν καὶ ἡλίκα ἐτρα...

Re: 1 Tim 5:9 Scope of μή
There's no accusative, but I've always assumed that this is a Greek equivalent to the Latin expression, "LX annos natus" = "60 years old"'; I take the expression μὴ ἔλαττον ἐτῶν ἑξήκοντα γεγονυῖα = ἥκιστά γε ἑξήκοντα ἔτη γεγονυῖα. cf. LSJ s.v. γίγνομαι 1 of persons, to be born ,...

Re: Acts 13:22 [ανδρα] κατα την καρδιαν μου
Wow! Thanks for typing out such a long entry from the dictionary. Such an herculean feat! As the commercial blurb goes, "You too can be a Hercules by using a simple clip and paste from Logos software, which will even automatically insert the reference a second time, when you add on a second se...

Re: 1 Tim 5:9 Scope of μή
Χήρα καταλεγέσθω μὴ ἔλαττον ἐτῶν ἑξήκοντα γεγονυῖα, ἑνὸς ἀνδρὸς γυνή, ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς μαρτυρουμένη, What is the scope of μή? The whole participial phrase, as if: "not having become less than sixty years old"? Or just the complement, as if: "having become not less than sixty years ol...

Re: Acts 13:22 [ανδρα] κατα την καρδιαν μου
So in other words, it means to be wholeheartedly devoted to God. What meaning of κατά are you putting that into? "According to..." γ. of a standard of any other kind κ. τ. χρόνον ὃν ἠκρίβωσεν in accordance w. the time which he had ascertained Mt 2:16. κ. τ. πίστιν ὑμῶν acc. to your faith ...

22 και μεταστησας αυτον ηγειρεν τον δαυιδ αυτοις εις βασιλεα ω και ειπεν μαρτυρησας ευρον δαυιδ τον του ιεσσαι [ανδρα] κατα την καρδιαν μου ος ποιησει παντα τα θεληματα μου Is [ανδρα] κατα την καρδιαν μου an idiom, or is it simpler? The surface level meaning is plain enough, but I've heard (can't r...

Re: εγω ειμι
Thanks, Bryant, I've always looked at John 1:18 strictly in the context of the prologue and it's obvious allusions to the OT text. His use of the phrase elsewhere is certainly intriguing, and I also never made the connection to Rev 1:4, which I have usually discussed as part of the author's often un...

Re: Is διὰ σοῦ a prefiguring of Modern Greek or its birth
The real point if interest here is the διὰ σοῦ. Is it a spark that glowed for a moment then grew cold, or is this the earliest witness to what would become για σου in the Modern idiom. BAGS has a special note about this papyrus down the bottom on the second page. I guess it "should" be υπ...
