Genesis 14:13
In Gen. 14:13 we have the first use of the word Hebrew. In the LXX it is περάτῃ which I take to mean "traveller, one who passes by, sojourns" etc. So my question relates to the Hebrew of which I am just a little rusty. Does הָעִבְרי come from עֹבֹר meaning "to pass by"? Is that w...

Re: Total vocabulary of Greek?
For some purposes, a minimal number of vocabulary words is all you need. "Me Tarzan, you Jane." Language tends to invent a single word (often made of a prefix and suffix) to explain a whole series of words. My mother coined the word, "ret" as the process of removing the dishes fr...

Re: "Tools of the Trade"
If Greek is under the gun, so are other "hard" courses like theology and history. The reason, as Carl intimates, is based on the philosophy of the school. 1. This school is here for the purpose of making money to pay for expenses. 2. This school is recognized for its well-known teachers wh...

Re: "Tools of the Trade"
When I was in seminary, several students complained about having to learn Greek and lobbied to have it removed from the curriculum. But what is ironic, is that some of these same students went to a mission field where they spent a couple years learning a foreign language. They gained fluency in one ...

Re: Rules for Language Learning
When learning Greek, I think we should take a page out of how children learn. When babies learn the parents' language, they are exposed to the words of body parts. Many body parts are common Greek words found in the NT such as head, face, eyes, ears, hand, finger, arm, elbow, palm, shoulder, chest, ...

Re: Best LXX with morphology?
James, All the info of CCAT is now in my lexicon at http://www.motorera.com/greek/lexicon/ The items in the lexicon are hyperlinked to the biblical texts found at http://www.motorera.com/greek/text/greek.html . CCAT had a lot of errors in spelling and in incorrect word identification. I am still in ...

Re: Best LXX with morphology?
Yes, I started with CCAT.
I made a number of changes particularly in punctuation and some spelling.
Currently, I am formatting the HTML coding so that just hovering over a word gives its basic meaning; but clicking it takes you to the lexicon.

Re: Throwing away my flashcards
I think a person has to begin with flashcards to gain some vocabulary. Coupled with that, he needs to understand the grammar. Those are usually taught in the first year of Greek classes. However, once a person has gained some understanding of those ingredients, I like to point a person to the follow...
