Re: Difficult sentence in Chrysostom

3. The subject of αφιησι is the same as the subject of είπε, presumably either the apostle or the scripture. It (or he) no longer leaves room for this contention (no longer permits this argument to have room).

Re: Difficult sentence in Chrysostom

1. They would say that the δι ου and θεος go together, are a pair, such that one is proper to the other. 2. The tricky bit is the second τω. I think it functions a a relative pronoun, whereby. So λέγοντας is followed in indirect discourse by two "clauses," one main (they would say that &qu...

Re: Series on Greek Isaiah

This is great. And what you're doing demonstrates the utility of the new Forum format. I don't think you could have done this with the email list. apocryphal gospels diglot

[For the moderators: So do NT apocrypha and pseudepigrapha belong in this section of the list, or does "Pseudepigrapha" in "Septuagint and Pseudepigrapha" mean "OT pseudepigrapha"? Maybe the "church fathers" section should be renamed to create a section for ea...

Charlie Johnson wrote:I'm thinking of reading texts on the Trinity by Athanasius and the Cappadocians.
Start with Athanasius, then. Makes sense both chronologically and in terms of difficulty.

Re: Preparing for Patristic Greek

Also, Charlie, where are you going to start? Rod Whitacre's Patristic Greek Reader (published by Hendrickson, now with Baker Academic [disclaimer (or would it be "claimer"): I work for Baker] gives an excellent set of selections with notes to help you through them. Or you could start with ...

Re: Preparing for Patristic Greek

LSJ, BDAG, and your favorite LXX lexicon will cover most of the vocabulary, but for more precision regarding patristic usage, there's a supplement to LSJ: A Patristic Greek Lexicon , ed. G. W. H. Lampe. Most seminary and university libraries should have it. If you plan to read a lot of patristic Gre...
