Re: Athanasius Contra Gentes

Stirling, I initially meant ἀναιρέω didn't seem like the sort of action a teaching does. A γραφή can proclaim, testify, etc though, as your citations as well as many biblical verses show. That said, I agree I postulated a weak reason; a teaching can conceivably lead to many things. Interestingly Ari...

Re: Athanasius Contra Gentes

The attributive position can be filled with arbitrarily long and complex phrases. God/Word (focus of entire §45) is the subject of ἀνελών, because a teaching cannot be the one to "abolish the godlessness etc", and as you've noted, the case mismatch is a strong clue as well. Thus imho Newma...

Matthew, you may like to know William Wake translated it (freely, no doubt thinking of Genesis 1:2) structurally almost as you did: So also the unfathomable and unsearchable floods of the deep, are kept in by his command. He did it from Codex Alexandrinus: a.jpg (I can imagine Barry groaning "W...

Re: φανεροω in Eph 5:13

Eph 5:8-15 is reflexive, and imma venture to suggest "enlightened" for φανερούμενον, Off-topic: So that's where the phrase "rise and shine" probably came from. I'm also intrigued by some parallel with an old chinese phrase to describe an upright man 光明磊落 (like light, like landing...

Re: The term "grammar-translation method"

That article linked above reminds me of a formalism vs post-structuralism debate I had in aesthetics class a long time ago.

Re: 1 Clement 20:5 - ἀβύσσων τε ἀνεξιχνίαστα καὶ νερτέρων ἀνεκδιήγητα κρίματα

I'm almost with Holmes et al, "The incomprehensiveness of the abysses and the indescribability of the underword — judgements of both are constrained by the same ordinances" (getting impatient with grammatical analysis; imma leave it to hardcore grammarians here). The preceding verses are s...

Re: Cataphoric use of Personal Pronouns

Greek word order is sometimes very strange and surprising
Parts of the epistles and extra-biblical texts can be quite convoluted, but the gospels are fairly straightforward.

Re: Cataphoric use of Personal Pronouns

Jean, I understand. Barry argued for a cataphoric possessive αὐτῶν while I argued for an anaphoric partitive. Note the KJV translators opted for an anaphoric possessive (with perplexing effect)! The situation with the scribes and pharisees at the banquet is uncertain. We don't know the banquet progr...
