Re: Metalanguage, shmetalanguage

Your statement represents a fundamental misreading of my statement. I said "prescriptive", not "descriptive". *Sheepish look* But you don't know what prescriptive grammar is; it is nothing to do with social class, but rather it prescribes rules rather than describing the languag...

Re: Metalanguage, shmetalanguage

ut we must still beware that sometimes "distilled rules" are incorrect! Has anyone not been taught that we should not begin a sentence with "And" or "But", or end a sentence with a preposition? And I would say that prescriptive grammar is something we should refer to b...

Re: temporal deixis in Acts 8:18

Jonathan, that doesn't exactly answer his question as to why δίδοται is a present. The participle may not be the main verb of the clause, but it is still the matrix verb for the complement in question: ὅτι διὰ τῆς ἐπιθέσεως τῶν χειρῶν τῶν ἀποστόλων δίδοται τὸ πνεῦμα So on to the actual question... I...

That's fine. But I wish you hadn't removed my original post. I was trying to say something relevant to the theoretical issue at hand.

Re: Subjective and objective genitive

You recognize that it's not a noun but a participle, right? I think that puts it in a different category; after all, none of the examples of genitives in this thread have been participles. Yes. That's exactly my point. I'm suggesting that participles are more useful for in Greek conveying subjectiv...

Re: Subjective and objective genitive

That's a genitive absolute: When the king was commanding all his leaders about Absalom, all the people heard it. That's debatable, since ἀκουω can take genitive objects. Personally, I find it difficult to read the participle clause as an absolute when it is follow directly after a verb that has no ...

Subjective/Objective Genitive in 2 Kingdoms 18:5

I came across this example in 2 Kingdoms over the weekend. I kind of wonder if participles are more useful in Greek for such constructions: πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἤκουσεν ἐντελλομένου τοῦ βασιλέως πᾶσιν τοῖς ἄρχουσιν ὑπὲρ Ἀβεσσαλώμ All the people heard about the king's command to all his generals regarding Absa...
