Re: historical present in Luke-Acts
ἰδὼν μὲν οὖν τὴν Ῥώμην ῥώμην ἔχουσαν, ἑαυτὸν παρέδωκεν ὁ Ἰούδας....I would ask how the Greek language would represent the English sentence, "Judah, having seen that the Roman military is the mightiest on earth, surrendered."

Re: Force of the perfect ἐγνώκαμεν in 1 John 2:3
δαυιδ λιμ: For the example you mention, ουκ εγνω αυτον essentially means ουκ εγνω πωποτε αυτον, so the aorist fits nicely. On the other hand, the perfect can also be used but it conveys ουκ εγνωκε αυτον εως του νυν, which is different. All kidding aside, David, you have made your point here using a...

Re: Romans 4:25 - antecedent of ὃς
Carl : So -- a stab at Greek metalanguage indicating pretty well the disdain for metalanguage. It also illustrates well, I think, how "metalanguage" came to be designated, "λαλία τῆς τῆς λαλίας λαλίας" -- "terrifyingly tedious talk about talk about talk." This exemplif...

Re: Force of the perfect ἐγνώκαμεν in 1 John 2:3
CARLSON: It's one of those grammatical terms I'm not particularly fond of. Basically an "intensive perfect" is supposed to emphasize the state resulting from an action and an "extensive perfect" is supposed to emphasize the action that brought about a resulting state. Well, then...

Re: Force of the perfect ἐγνώκαμεν in 1 John 2:3
CONRAD: I'm one of those who are skeptical of any regular clear distinction between aorist and perfect usage, unless there's a clear contextual reason for making the distinction. I'm one of those guys too, and would note that George Bambas' High Modern Greek (Method 6?) has the aorist ἐγνωρἰσαμεν, ...

Re: Force of the perfect ἐγνώκαμεν in 1 John 2:3
ἠρώτησεν ὁ Στέφανος: What is the force of the perfect ἐγνώκαμεν? χαίροις, Στέφανε, Using the so-called Method 5, I would metaphrase 1John 2:3 as καὶ ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι καλῶς καὶ ὀρθῶς γινώσκομεν αὐτόν, ὥστε τῆν γνῶσιν αὐτοῦ μένειν ἐν ἡμῖν, ἐὰν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν. [/size] or, if you pref...

Re: Romans 4:25 - antecedent of ὃς
Jonathan ἔγραψε : Could anyone give an equally good answer without meta-language? Or with meta-language in Greek? ἡ μἐν οὖν προέλευσις τοῦ «ὃς» τὸ «Ἰησοῦν τὸν κύριον» ἐστιν. τὸ γὰρ ὑποτακτικὸν ἄρθρον ἔχει τὸ μὲν γένος (ἀρσενικὸν) τῆς προελεύσεως, τὸν δὲ ἀριθμὸν (ἑνικὸν,) τὴν δὲ πτῶσιν δ’οὔ. ἡ γὰρ π...

Re: "Method 3" A New Way to Learn and Improve your Greek
Here is Method 3 applied to a typically marvelous and somewhat tricky sentence from Plato. Plato, Symposium 195a: εἷς δὲ τρόπος ὀρθὸς παντὸς ἐπαίνου περὶ παντός, λόγῳ διελθεῖν οἷος οἵων αἴτιος ὢν τυγχάνει περὶ οὗ ἂν ὁ λόγος ᾖ. Method 3, Level 1: οὖτος ἐστιν ὁ καλὸς λόγος περὶ τῶν θεῶν. δεῖ λέγειν τί...

Re: "Method 3" A New Way to Learn and Improve your Greek
Hi, Ed and Carl, You two raise some decent theoretical objections to Method 3, you really do. I promise I will address those soon, but you really need to let me finish creating Method 3 first, then we can test it out on some more intermediate learners, THEN you guys can tear it to shreds. But quickl...
