Re: Share your learning experience...and how it rates
But I don't think reading is enough; I think one needs to learn to use ancient Greek as a vehicle of communication, preferably both as a speaker and listener in conversation (that is far, far better) but at the least as a writer and reader of texts. If it's at all possible, one would do well to sei...

Re: Best textbooks (Beginning, Intermediate)
What textbooks do you think are best for beginning / intermediate Greek? Here are my Top Ten Textbooks, in the order that I encountered them. 1. J. Gresham Machen, New Testament Greek for Beginners (the best of it's type, simple, systematic, 100% inductive) 2. Paula Safire, Ancient Greek Alive (won...

Re: Does pronunciation matter? If so, why?
Does it really matter which pronunciation someone uses, as long as they have some intelligible way to pronounce Greek? ου διαφερει, κατα με. ει εγω καταλαμβανω τινα λεγοντα Ελληνιστι εμοι, ἡ προφορὰ τουτου καλη εστιν. ὁ Sean Connery και ὁ Mel Gibson και ὁ Bill Clinton λαλοῦσι Βρεττανικῃ ου μεν ὁμοι...

Re: Lucian of Samasota
Hi, Jonathan, The sentence you quote is from the preface. There the Greek is quite different from the rest of the text, more complicated syntax, more Attic. After that, the syntax becomes very simple. "And setting out from there we came to an island. We landed and getting out of the ship we mar...

Re: name that tune
I'm not sure that "Name that tune" belongs under syntax and grammar, but here is an easy one:
την φιλιαν, πεμψω σοι εγω,
την φιλιαν, εσομαι πιστος.
την φιλιαν, τηηηηην φιλιαν, την φιλιαν
πεμψω σοι εγω,
HINT: It's by the Beatles.

Re: Lucian of Samasota
No specific allusions, Barry--assuming that Jonah is not in mind with the whale episode! It's more the general theme--how true is history? Given that Lucian did know about the Christians it's hard not to imagine him having in the back of his mind Old Testament Historiography--even the Book of Acts. ...

Re: Lucian of Samasota
Lucian is making fun of something. It's assumed that his writing in mock epic, making fun of Homer's style. Certainly the True Story is simple in its syntax, but the thought occurs to me that Lucian is making fun of the Old Testament.
