Re: Romans 4:11
I see the second phrase as in apposition to or explicative of the first, and so it would be a purpose clause as well. Also, while εἰς is occasionally used of result, is it so used when the object is an articular infinitive? I have always seen it as parallel to ad+gerundive in Latin, so regularly use...

Re: Post-hoc editing of B-Greek posts
I have found the "preview" button invaluable for editing posts prior to final submission. It allows one to see the post exactly as it will appear, and so makes it easier to spot mistakes. Not that even then all mistakes are so avoided, but it does help, a lot.

Re: Software and syntactical search with pronouns
What 98 instances are you referring to? Do you have a specific question you are trying to answer or a thesis you are trying to prove? Stephen and Jonathan, thank you for your interactions. The specific question that I'm addressing is the usage of the demonstrative pronoun (neuter, singular, nominat...

Re: Hendiadys in Titus 2.13
Andrew, I read most of these authors yesterday. It seems like every attempt to eradicate the fundamental ambiguity in the text will after all the smoke clears prove to be a failure in as much as the text will still be there, unharmed, ambiguous as ever. The sort of exegesis that attempts to stamp o...

Re: 1 Corinthians 14:2
Most translators render ακουει as "understands". Is there a reason for that translation? It strikes me that this might be something like the tree falling in the forest with no one around. Couldn't it just as easily mean "no one hears"? If Paul prohibits speaking in tongues in pu...

Re: Hendiadys in Titus 2.13
I've always thought that hendiadys requires a conjunction (otherwise it's something else like an appositive genitive), though I'm open to evidence that the broader understanding is actually current. You are right -- they are supposed to be the same case but connected by a copula, so I retract my st...

Re: Hendiadys in Titus 2.13
Since the nouns in a hendiadys are normally in the same case, I have always taken τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ to be the hendiadys, "of the glory of the the great God" = something like "of the great and glorious God..." Thank you Berry, that helps. So a hendiadys doesn't require a...

Re: Hello from Tim
Welcome Tim, I am just learning too and I am very interested in learning Greek (not modern) as a language. Elsewhere I have seen the suggestion to only take notes in the target language when doing study, and writing definitions seems to be a great way to do that. As a beginner my definitions will c...

Re: Acts 15:20 The extent of ἀπὸ / ἀλισγημάτων
Well, I note that F.F. Bruce and Culy & Parsons (Acts: A Handbook on the Greek Text), simply assume that 4 discrete items are being discussed, with no hint to the contrary (i.e., that the genitives following the καί's are dependent genitives with τῶν ἀλισγημάτων) as did every translation and com...
