Re: 01: The Semantic Value of the Tense Stems
On verb choice, I like the middle verbs in order to get the student in a new track of thinking and outside of morphology. On the other hand, most of the "good" verbs are irregular are are not attested in all four classes in NT/LXX. πορεύε-σθαι, πορευθῆ-ναι, πεπορεῦ-σθαι, πορεύσε-σθαι coul...

Re: 01: The Semantic Value of the Tense Stems
Basically, that means that the reader needs to consider FOUR stems, or more precisely, four tense-aspect categories. I started down this path yesterday, and got stuck. I got as far as what you mention above - we need tense-aspect categories that can include more than one stem. The first step is rel...

Re: A review noted by Carl
In http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/2008-February/045834.html Carl gave a link to a good review. There's an interesting footnote regarding 01: note 1 which we are discussing at the moment. Do you mean this review ? Do you mean this footnote? On questions of tense and aspect generally, Rij...

Re: 01: The Semantic Value of the Tense Stems
The two issues I would have for the typical Koine student (e.g., one who had a year of Mounce), would be: (1) The unfamiliarity of the verb βουλεύεσθαι, and (2) The extinction of the future perfect. In addition, they may be more familiar with, and wondering about, the principal parts. If we're look...

How crude is σκύβαλον?
Someone asked me just exactly how crude the word σκύβαλον is in NT Greek. He was thinking of this passage: 7 Ἀλλὰ ἅτινα ἦν μοι κέρδη, ταῦτα ἥγημαι διὰ τὸν Χριστὸν ζημίαν. 8 ἀλλὰ μενοῦνγε καὶ ἡγοῦμαι πάντα ζημίαν εἶναι διὰ τὸ ὑπερέχον τῆς γνώσεως Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου μου δι' ὃν τὰ πάντα ἐζημιώθην...

Re: 01: The Semantic Value of the Tense Stems
Rijksbaron's "tense stems" are not the same as Smyth's stems, and not as closely related to the principal parts. Rijksbaron has only 5 stems: - the present stem (e.g. βουλεύε-σθαι) - the aorist stem (e.g. βουλεύσα-σθαι) - the perfect stem (e.g. βεβουλεῦ-σθαι) - the future stem (e.g. βουλεύ...

Re: Rijksbaron and the Greek New Testament
Finally, is the assumption that R's view of the verb is fundamentally the correct one? This is a discussion of Rijksbaron's book, which a lot of people here seem to appreciate it. People are free to assume whatever they want. As we discuss it, we should also point out any flaws in his account, or d...

Re: 01: Note 1
Any attempt to give an overview of all the different views would be much more complex. Especially if it also attempted to show why one view is superior to another. Perhaps in an appendix? Or perhaps it would be better to simply acknowledge that there are other views out there, without going into them?

Oops, you already answered this:Jonathan Robie wrote:Is the "passive stem" a marker of aspect? Do ἐλύθην and λυθήσομαι have the same aspect?
Can you say more?Stephen Carlson wrote:I would claim that the passive stem conveys perfective aspect, even in the future

Re: Rijksbaron and the Greek New Testament
Makes sense. I have BDR, but not BDF. They're very similar. BDR is better formatted and sometimes fuller. Oh, and it's auf deutsch. The section numbers seem to correspond, at least sometimes. Do they always? Yeah, I noticed the German bit, I bought this grammar in Germany when I thought I could use...
