Re: Three Methods for Helping Beginners Learn to read Hel. I

You are really missing the point. The point is that there are people out there who want to learn to read Greek and cannot read Greek. Priority one is to learn to read Greek. Priority two is to hair-split the difference between καὶ and δὲ and πλοῖον and ναῦς. What the heck difference does it make to...

Catenae Graecorum Patrum

Found following a tip from Stephen Carlson:

Catenae Graecorum Patrum(Chain of Greek Fathers) on New Testament.
J.A. Cramer. 1844. Roman Catholic. 8 vols.

Interesting for people who want to read commentaries on the Greek text, written in Greek.

Re: Three Methods for Helping Beginners Learn to read Hel. I

Stephen Carlson wrote:Nevertheless, if one desires a Greek perspective, I think it would be a good idea to look at what the scholiasts did, glossing rare words with phrases of more common words and indicating certain features with a meta-language in Greek.
Can you point us to examples? I'm intrigued ...

Re: List of Grammars

Are you looking for an introductory grammar? A reference grammar that you can quickly find answers in? A grammar to read repeatedly and learn from, having attained some mastery of the language already?

Will you read primarily in the New Testament, or more widely?

Re: Logged out every time

Murray,

I just changed that. If this fixes the problem, I owe you a beverage of your choice.

Re: Three Methods for Helping Beginners Learn to read Hel. I

Jonathan, your "Greek #2" + gooblygook replaced with lexical content (3mplxhemtr=> αυτοι) really is "3". I would really like to start with short quotes from the original text with some explanation of what they mean, followed by a paraphrase, similar to Mark's, but in simple decl...

Re: Three Methods for Helping Beginners Learn to read Hel. I

Your method three is part of caretaker speech. It is what we do with children when they don't understand something. We break it down into pieces that they do understand. However, such a process is very dynamic and changes between speakers because they always have different backgrounds. Case in poin...

Re: Smyth "A Greek Grammar"

I'm wondering if anyone could compare and contrast Smyth's grammar with A.T. Robertson's. Thanks very much for the education we've enjoyed through this thread. I was inspired to print and bind myself a large print version of the 1920 edition of Smyth. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/e57sjebehEzOE...

Reader's Editions of the New Testament

I've seen these Reader's Editions of the Greek New Testament:
  • Barclay Newman's, excerpt here
  • Goodrich and Lukaszewski's, excerpt here
Are there others worth considering? Anyone have feedback on these?
