Re: John 8:33 Antecedant of "they"
Thanks, Tony, I appreciate your comments. But I still think that your interpretation is more unbelievable than mine. In the phrase "the Jews who believed", the word order suggests focus on belief, and in John's gospel that is the main theme. There is a repeated contrast between the unbelie...

Re: John 8:33 Antecedant of "they"
Commentaries seem to be split as to who ἀπεκρίθησαν refers to in verse 33...

Re: Aorist ἦλθεν c. inf. too
Luke 18:3: χήρα δὲ ἦν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ, καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν, λέγουσα , Ἐκδίκησόν με ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου μου. This is a good parallel to Acts 19:18. In both cases the imperative form indicates an imperfective aspect which in these contexts refers to an iterative action. In Luke 18:3 the same perso...

Re: 2 Cor. 5:20
Paul, I completely agree with your understanding. To me, it is the only one that makes sense in the context. Paul and his audience are ambassadors for Christ who plead (to people/the world) that they be reconciled to God. The previous verse introduced that reconciliation between God and the world. T...

Re: Is ποτε really enclitic in Gal 1:23
Maybe it will become clearer if I first express the sentence without a relative but in two parallel clauses: νῦν εὐαγγελίζεται τὴν πίστιν, ποτε ἐπόρθει τὴν πίστιν. Would you agree that ποτε is first in its clause? Put a colon before the ποτε to be crystal clear, and, yeah, I would agree. In order t...

Re: Is ποτε really enclitic in Gal 1:23
But ποτέ is first in the relative clause: ἥν ποτέ ἐπόρθει. The relative pronoun has to come first as it marks the clause as a relative clause. The relative clause is a rankshifted clause and part of the noun phrase τὴν πίστιν ἥν ποτε/ποτέ ἐπόρθει. The relative pronoun is first here because it is, w...

Re: Is ποτε really enclitic in Gal 1:23
What exactly is meant by first? I think first in the clause. Would these "some editors" then agree with me that the ποτέ in ποτέ ἐπόρθει is orthotonic since it appears first in its unit, while the ποτε in Ὁ διώκων ἡμᾶς ποτε is not orthotonic, because it is not first? No to the first quest...

Re: Is ποτε really enclitic in Gal 1:23
Would you find it easier to accept if I rewrite the sentence as follows: Ὁ διώκων ἡμᾶς ποτε νῦν εὐαγγελίζεται τὴν πίστιν ἥν ποτέ ἐπόρθει. No, it doesn't for it accents the wrong ποτε. I've been reading through Chandler's Practical Introduction to Greek Accentuation (1881), and it looks like some ed...

Re: Is ποτε really enclitic in Gal 1:23
Well, those are good questions, Eeli. To a certain extent, there is some artificiality in the accentuation convention. In my experience, however, it tends to overstate rather than understate the accents, especially for proclitics such as the article (in all cases) and prepositions. Of course, the o...

Re: Is ποτε really enclitic in Gal 1:23
While I have no comment on the theories of so-called enclitics and their accentuation, it may be worthwhile to look at the sentence as a whole and analyze it from a different perspective: Ὁ διώκων ἡμᾶς ποτε νῦν εὐαγγελίζεται τὴν πίστιν ἥν ποτε ἐπόρθει The main verb is εὐαγγελίζεται with a fronted co...
