Luke 2:2: Can πρώτη be translated as "before"?
αὕτη ἡ ἀπογραφὴ πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας Κυρηνίου In Luke 2:2, can the feminine πρώτη be translated as "before," as in, "the census occurred before...," or is it most certainly translated correctly as "first," modifying αὕτη ἡ ἀπογραφὴ? John Gill and (IIRC...

Re: Constructio ad Sensum in the prologue of John
I'd also like to respond to John Milton. It seems to be his assertion that the author of the Gospel did not see the λόγος and/ or φῶς prior to vv. 9-10 as "personal," hence the usage of the neuter pronoun αὐτὸ ("it") in v. 5 ("And, the light shines in the darkness, and the d...

Re: Constructio ad Sensum in the prologue of John
In John 1:5 φαινει is present tense therefore it seems to include a present idea. Also κατελαβεν seems to suggest a present apprehension or understanding from a present revelation. I am not sure that I agree with John Milton's position on this. Is φαινει a timeless present? I do not think so. I bel...

Re: What kind of genitive is «μορφῇ θεοῦ» in Phil. 2:6?
No offense Mr. Somsel, but if I knew the type of genitive, I would not have asked the question.

Re: Patrologia Graece Migne
These look like the same versions of these texts that were stole from TLG a while back, if I remember correctly. If so, then they're there illegally. Maybe someone else would be able to confirm that... Ah, if that's the case, then my apology. I wasn't trying to promote stolen material on the intern...

Patrologia Graece Migne
I'm not sure if this has been posted before. I've seen links to scanned images of PGM on the internet. But, you know, when you want to copy-and-paste some Greek text from PGM for a paper, well, that's not exactly possible with scanned PDF images. So, I came upon this link one day that had PDFs with ...

What kind of genitive is «μορφῇ θεοῦ» in Phil. 2:6?
Maybe there is a better sub-forum for this question, so if there is, please feel free to move it. One on another forum asked, "Does God have a form?" My first thought was "no," but then I thought about Philippians 2:6. Now, I don't think God has a physical, visible form, but is t...
