Re: Greek Readers for attic

I used Herodotus and Homer for my advanced Greek classes at TAA, and his Caesar text for AP Latin. The books are actually print on demand, and one can get a free PDF of them as well. Dr. Steadman is also quite personable -- I emailed him several times to report errors (which he invites readers to do...

Re: Passive verbs + instrumental datives without ἐν

τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι διὰ τῆς πίστεως ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι is a periphrastic passive, and I believe the periphrasis is due to the tense, not the voice, so I'm assuming the dative is the impersonal agent by which we are saved. I'm wondering why it is not constructed with the ἐν? (Rule of thumb: t...

Re: Rom. 12:3-8 Equivalencies

But we don't want to say that πίστις is a χάρισμα, do we? Well, checking that has raised an interesting point. τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι διὰ τῆς πίστεως, καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν· θεοῦ τὸ δῶρον· 9 οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων, ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται. I had always assumed the "that" in English referred to...

Re: Why Study Extrabiblical Greek Texts?

Not sure what reading Greek Tragedy is worth for anyone involved biblical studies. Personally I took up Greek Tragedy because I was exposed to the Grene-Lattimore Sophocles at an early age. It's not easy going on your own. Reading with someone else online didn't really help me that much since you r...

Re: Why Study Extrabiblical Greek Texts?

1. It's one thing to read made up sentences that are unlike anything any Greek author might have written (except perhaps a schoolboy who's been a bit to much into the Falernian), it's quite another to write sentences which are then corrected according to actual Greek models. 2. Reading Greek tragedy...

Re: Where to begin...

Lots of good advice. Let me add and emphasize: read as much as possible, and read as much extra-biblical Greek as you can, from the entire spectrum of writings available to us from the ancient world. Do not rapidly translate, but actually read for comprehension without translating. Memorizing vocabu...

Re: ἄρχομαι + infintive in Grimm-Thayer : Danker

Yes, After reading Thayer again this morning came to the same conclusion. The language and reasoning employed by NT scholars of the mid-to-late 19th Century is often difficult for me to unpack. Thayer was a product of a school system which is now a cultural fossil. BTW, his D.D. was honorary. He wa...

Having started in Classical before NT, I found that I often recognized low frequency NT vocab better than many of the high frequency words...

Well, Barry, there's always the possibility that the sentence was intended as "You already wrote to them on your own behalf, but now I'm going to write again."
Generous you are, perhaps to a fault.

I'm hoping that the book actually uses ἔγραψα...
