Re: Word order in Luke 2:25

that's what I was thinking as well ... it seems emphatic. The commentaries I consulted thought it "probably" was emphatic. I only asked to see if there was good reason for it to not be emphatic. The word order πνεῦμα ἦν ἅγιον is perhaps for emphasis. I. Howard Marshall, The Gospel of Luke:...

Word order in Luke 2:25

Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος ἦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ᾧ ὄνομα Συμεὼν καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος καὶ εὐλαβὴς προσδεχόμενος παράκλησιν τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ πνεῦμα ἦν ἅγιον ἐπʼ αὐτόν·
I am particularly intrigued by the word order in the clause καὶ πνεῦμα ἦν ἅγιον and its potential significance.

Re: Best way into Paul?

As discussed above, you really can't go wrong with Galatians. But allow me to offer the way I started with Paul -- with Philemon. Its really short so it doesn't seem overwhelming. You can use O'Brien, Moo, Harris or Bruce as a guide. I found Colossians pretty easy to read after Philemon.

Re: Word Order in John 13:6

Enclitic pronouns, especially dative and accusative pronouns but also genitive pronouns, tend to be positioned after the first word in an intonation unit. They are unaccented and tend to be attracted to the most phonologically prominent word in the intonation unit and follow right after it. This is...

Re: Smyth "A Greek Grammar"

The advantage of the Logos edition is that it is hyperlinked to other resources such as its Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament Glossary. :geek:

Re: Smyth "A Greek Grammar"

[ I was disappointed that Logos didn't include Smyth's Grammar in the free distribution of the Perseus Library (some other Greek and Latin grammars were included). I think that the PDF file of Smyth's grammar is unwieldy. The easiest format to use is the Perseus at UChicago; with table of contents ...

Re: Word Order in John 13:6

ἔρχεται οὖν πρὸς Σίμων Πέτρον. λέγει αὐτῷ, Κύριε, σύ μου νίπτεις τοὺς πόδας; I was wondering about the placement of μου prior to νίπτεις. Does the Greek text grammatically move the possessive pronoun forward as a matter of emphasis? Does Peter's question, and its phrasing in Greek grammar, imply a ...

2 Cor 1:11

I get the general sense of 2 cor 1:11, but I'm having difficulty with getting my head wrapped around the verse. συνυπουργούντων καὶ ὑμῶν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τῇ δεήσει, ἵνα ἐκ πολλῶν προσώπων τὸ εἰς ἡμᾶς χάρισμα διὰ πολλῶν εὐχαριστηθῇ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν. I'm having particularly with the prepositional phrases ἐκ πολλῶν ...
