Re: Sim on the genitive absolute

I was shocked ... at the use of "always" and "never" repeatedly. Forgive me if this seems picky but, regardless of the limitations or validity of Levinsohn's claims, my electronic copy of the relevant chapter (11) tells me that he makes assertions using "always" (or &q...

Re: Mark 2:3 - could missing antecedent be intentional?

There's a survey of the phenomenon from a Bible translator's perspective in Paul Ellingworth, "Who Are 'They' in the Synoptic Gospels? What is the Problem?" The Bible Translator 58 (2007): 110-23.

Re: ἐν (τῷ) κόσμῳ

The only work I can recall attempting to deal with such questions in any depth is Richard Hoyle's Scenarios, Discourse and Translation . It's a long time since I worked through it. He develops Levinsohn's claim that the absence of the article with identifiable participants marks them as in some way ...

Re: ἀγαπάω and φιλέω again...

don't have time now, but interested to see to what extent φιλῶ shows up in the papyri and how it is used there. I've not checked this out, but Lee claims: "φιλῶ did continue to be used with its old meaning “love,” but not entirely on the same footing as ἀγαπῶ. A highly significant fact is that...

Re: ἀγαπάω and φιλέω again...

Just to add some fresh fuel to this long-burning fire, here's the abstract from J. A. L. Lee's recent note in Novum Testamentum 59 (2017): "The alternation of the words for “love” in John 21:15-17 is a long-standing puzzle that has defied solution. It is suggested in this note that ἀγαπῶ and φι...

Re: 1 Cor 6:4

Jonathan, Here's an online source that covers many of the key issues, though it doesn't fully discuss the interesting constituent order. Perhaps Stephen could offer some comments on this. Yes, indeed. If Danove is correct in his analysis of the larger patterns of usage, this provides an answer to the original poster's question.

Re: List of Articular Infinitives

I've now compared Burk's lists in both the paper and the monograph. The number of examples cited in the paper is 322, not the 323 that it states. The monograph (p. 24, notes 108, 109) lists 200 examples with prepositions (removing 1 Thess 3:3 from the earlier list) and 124 without prepositions (add...
