Re: ὄρνις vs ὄρνις

With regard to ἠ ἄνθρωπος, BDAG gives a reference to Herodotus 1.60.5. A bit of context is necessary to get the idea (translation at Perseus): ἐν τῷ δήμῳ τῷ Παιανιέι ἦν γυνὴ τῇ οὔνομα ἦν Φύη, μέγαθος ἀπὸ τεσσέρων πηχέων ἀπολείπουσα τρεῖς δακτύλους καὶ ἄλλως εὐειδής: ταύτην τὴν γυναῖκα σκευάσαντες πα...

Re: Eusebius, Commentary on Isaiah

Ken, I would be interested in attempting to read a selected passage or two. 280 pages of text is too daunting. Andrew

Re: Ἀλώπηξ καὶ βότρυς (Aesop, Perry 15)

I suppose I find myself imagining the fox sauntering off in happy unreality, rather than in bitterness. Certainly the English expression 'sour grapes' does convey bitter disappointment, but that doesn't mean that the tale (lines 1 & 2 of Chantry v.1) has to be read that way. I am not sure that I...

Re: Gal. 4:13-14

Hi Jonathan, it's the second level of brackets that had made me think that you were putting οὐκ ἐξουθενήσατε οὐδὲ ἐξεπτύσατε and following under oἴδατε - because it's on the same level of indent as ὅτι διʼ ἀσθένειαν τῆς σαρκὸς κ.τ.λ. I suppose a programmer would take the ] on line 6 as signalling th...

Re: Ἀλώπηξ καὶ βότρυς (Aesop, Perry 15)

I think I have read somewhere that τὰ ἐπιμύθια were added later. It seems to me that we have in view here two different ways of responding to a failure to achieve a desired result. One can blame the circumstances - the bunch was exceptionally high, I had a hard day hunting yesterday and am not as st...

Re: Gal. 4:13-14

Thanks, Jonathan, I can see that I needed to close the bracket opened with οἴδατε. So I think I would have it like this (that is, as my attempt to represent Lachmann as interpreted by Burton): [ οὐδέν με ἠδικήσατε· ] [ οἴδατε δὲ [ ὅτι διʼ ἀσθένειαν τῆς σαρκὸς εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν τὸ πρότερον ], καὶ [ ...

Re: Ἀλώπηξ καὶ βότρυς (Aesop, Perry 15)

I had in mind a more radical way of reconciling himself to the situation - he did say it πρὸς ἑαυτὴν, after all. I rather liked the section on cognitive dissonance in this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fox_a ... dissonance

Re: Ἀλώπηξ καὶ βότρυς (Aesop, Perry 15)

Thanks, Carl. I can see that for figs or grapes, but find it a little harder for πράγματα. Is there still a time element - 'I failed in my endeavour, because it wasn't the right moment for it' - which I suppose is quite near to 'I failed, because the circumstances weren't propitious'. Actually, I do...
