Dative participle clause Matt. 8:23

Post by Stirling Bartholomew »

Matt. 8:23 Καὶ ἐμβάντι αὐτῷ εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

In terms of discourse function, what would we call the Dative participle clause in Matt. 8:23?

“Adverbial clauses are employed to provide the situational context for the event or state that is described in a main
clause” (Whaley 1997:247). They express “an additional statement which does not form an essential part of the verbal
notion of the main verb” (Healey & Healey 1990). This paper does not consider participial clauses that are used
adjectively (attributively) or as a verbal complement. Healey & Healey discuss ways to distinguish the adverbial and
adjectival uses of Greek participial clauses.
