Thanks for your thoughts, Iver. I bet the fact that our theories are so different makes it incredible difficult to find common ground. I think we both agree that either one (though we differ on which one) of the ποτε's in Gal 1:23 is contrastive with the νῦν and could arguably then be accented as an orthotone. (It appears that the editorial practice of the NA28 is only to accent contrastive ποτέ's that are graphically first, which avoids the issue.) I wish there was a way we can analyze it without having to invoke our respective theories of word order, since they are incommensurate. (The post about the placement of γάρ is a little better in this regard of finding common ground, and I still hope to come back to that.) For example, the apparent fact that ἥν ποτε ἐπόρθει is in a non-restrictive relative clause suggests to me that it is tangential to the main idea of the sentence and thus that the real contrast is earlier. Maybe that's a way forward, I don't know.
