Writing Greek by Anderson & Taylor

Post by NathanSmith »

I received the new Greek comp textbook Writing Greek: An Introduction to Writing in the Language of Classical Athens as a gift recently. When I went to start working in it I was saddened but not surprised that the book did not contain an answer key for the exercises. This of course is published in a separate volume (Key to Writing Greek), which I presume is somewhat rare based on the high price I had to pay for it.

I'll share any thoughts I have on it as I work my way through. Does anyone have experience with Writing Greek?

Please do share your thoughts.

I just picked up this book myself and have worked on the first lesson. Let's collaborate off list about it. If anyone else on-list wants to join, send me a private message.

I don't see anything wrong with doing the exercises in a thread on this forum. Someone could post the questions and a group of people can offer their take on the translations.

I agree. That way, we could explore alternatives, it could be a good way to learn.

I agree that it would be a great learning experience, but I think there is a concern for copyright violation if we wholesale copy the exercises into a thread. Thoughts?

You could run a Moodle Group off to the side.

Anyone know if this would fall under "fair use"? I would have thought it did.

I actually wrote to the publishers. They responded immediately, but only to say that they had sold off their rigths to the book to another publisher, and had forwarded my question to them. No reply yet.

I think there is absolutely no problem in Nathan and I or others posting their translation of the exercises. The problem is someone reviewing that translation would almost certainly want to see the English sentence we started with. According to pages (not words) the Exercises constitute about 10% of the book, more than what is usually considered fair use.

So, Nathan and I will share our translations. If you have the book, great. If not, we would sure still like your comments. I'll bring up another window just now and put up our translations side by side for Chapter 1-2.
