Jonathan Robie, thanks so much for the tip on using Firefox for Android to display polytonic! I'd given up on this. Now I can use the word study tool at http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/morph?l= !!

To enter text there I have to use a sequence like a/)| etc. so it doesn't resolve the typing problem (on this forum) but at least i can read peoples' comments.

Will all Windows tablets allow polytonic keyboards? One I was looking at is the "HP Stream 7" with Windows 8.1.

Thanks

Following J. Robie's tip, I can *view* polytonic Greek now (on Android) using Firefox for Android. Can't type it, but can at least now use the word study tool http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/morph?l=

where, to enter text, I have to use e.g. a/)| etc.

So I went out and perhaps did something stupid. I picked up an LG Android tablet. Greek polytonic fonts appear fine in the Google Chrome browser. But I can only get a modern Greek keyboard to appear - there does not seem to be a polytonic Greek keyboard. Does anyone know if there is a polytonic Greek keyboard for Android tablets yet? Otherwise, I may have to return it for some other tablet.

Louis,

There is this post, with updated comments, the most recent of which is dated August 15 of this year:

It doesn't look good for polytonic Greek on Android : (

Now that I've switched from iPad to Samsung Galaxy s2 tablet, I'm wondering if anyone can update me on the status of typing Greek polytonic on Android 5.x? Has anyone found a good solution for this? It appears to me that my tablet will display polytonic fonts OK, but I don't see any obvious solution for typing Greek polytonic. This is more 'nice to have' than major inconvenience for me as I don't type a lot of Greek on my tablet - but it would definitely be nice to have.

Tavultesoft have an Android app, available through the Google Playstore, called 'Keyman Free'. After downloading it offers a wide range of languages from which it is simple to download a polytonic Greek keyboard. The app will produce text on a dedicated blank page, from which it is easy to copy-and-paste to any document format your device may offer. It works well on my Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo.

David.

Thanks David. That looks like it will serve my purposes just fine. Produces a Unicode output, and though it is not quite as nice as having a keyboard proper which you can bring up in any app, still as you said it works well within the Keyman setting and copy and paste will be easy enough for the limited use I plan on this platform. Thanks again.

If anyone wants to do the work to contribute a polytonic Greek keyboard to Android, I know someone in that group and could make arrangements. It's more about configuration than programming.
