"The Future of Ancient Greek"

Post by cwconrad »

I am not much surprised to read a clear formulation of what I fear may indeed be the future of ancient Greek -- and of Biblical Greek sooner than of Classical Attic. It's a matter of learning to make full use of digital tagged texts. This is a blog entry at Dickinson College Commentaries: http://blogs.dickinson.edu/dcc/2012/08/ ... ent-greek/
οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

Carl,

I think that future has arrived at least for some. My nephew recently studied both greek and hebrew at some very well known seminary in So Cal where their work was almost entirely with Accordance or some equivalent on the other platform.

I was hoping this was a thread on The Future (tense aspect) of Ancient Greek since in another place there has been some discussion of the Future Optative in Attic Tragedy.

I think I said to you once before, Carl, that I anticipate specialists in Greek to be relegates to the creation of such software tools more than anything else. And its already happening. Randall Buth's work might stem the tide somewhat...perhaps?
