OT: BHebrew forum is down

Post by Kirk Lowery »

Apologies for posting off topic, but I have no other way of communicating with some BHebrew members.

Among the hats I wear is as Moderator/Site Administrator of the Biblical Hebrew forum. Eight days ago we experienced an unexpected and catastrophic server failure. We had no opportunity to notify the membership of the problem. So I'm taking advantage of this medium to communicate with those on B-Greek who are also members of the "BHebrew" forum. Jonathan Robie (the hardware owner) is working on the problem, but it's taking longer than expected. I have no estimate on when we will be back up. :-(

Please pass this on to interested parties. I will post here again when we have a resolution.

Blessings,
Kirk

Here's the update. I need to restore data from a server backup, which Rackspace is converting to their current server format. I should have access to it tomorrow. We are moving the server to ibiblio.org, it will probably be served from the URI ****, though that might change.

I expect it to be back up some time during the coming week.

I really apologize for the interruption.

I am now looking at a running instance of the b-hebrew forum on a cloud server, we were able to get the data - I have not yet verified that it is all there.

Kirk and I are moving the server to run on ibiblio.org (thanks, ibiblio!), probably using the domain ****.

Hi Gents - Any updates on this?

Kinda needing my Hebrew discussion fix, hence my joining in on any discussions that mention LXX on B-Greek atm (apologies!) :)

The current status is that the data for the forum has been restored and physically moved to the new host at ibiblio. We've been working on getting the new domain name to resolve correctly, a new instance of the database server working. We are now importing the database data (all those posts, guys!) and getting the software updated to the latest and greatest.

We appreciate your patience. Remember that everybody has day jobs, so this has to be fitted in between everything else. And there have been technical glitches that I won't bore you with. But rest assured that we're working on it every day...

If you want us to get b-hebrew up and running, you have to promise to keep participating in the LXX discussion - don't give me incentives to keep it down!

Exactly. The new domain name is working now (I got that wrong initially), we will advertise it once everything is up and running correctly. We got the new database created yesterday - that took longer than expected. I need to correct all absolute references to the forum in the database data so they resolve to the correct posts and import the data. Kirk is working on updating the software.

My guess? Some time next week.

Fair enough guys.

As a web-designer and someone who's had to aid others doing this very same thing (every tried restoring a forum that had the equivalent of nearly 500k posts? If you haven't, you don't want to!), I understand your predicament very well.

Roll on next week! :D

I have some good news and some bad news.

Good news: we have the BHebrew forum up and running at an undisclosed location on our new platform. We still need to upgrade it to the current phpBB software before we can disclose that location.

Bad news: we have posts only up to 20 May, there was an issue with my backups. So a few months are missing.

Watch this space. Kirk will provide the new location when the new phpBB3 version has been installed. In the meantime, please enlighten us here on the LXX threads ....
