Woman's day at the SPA

How can I best learn new vocabulary items? What aids are there and what pitfalls should be avoided? How does a beginner learn to use a lexicon?

Woman's day at the SPA

Post by Alan Patterson » July 2nd, 2013, 11:01 am

I am looking for the word that would be used for a "spa" in Hellenistic/Attic Greek. By spa, I mean a place where women generally go to get a facial treatment, and perhaps a hair cut, their nails, and a wax (if such was in use back then).

The word in Modern Greek, I think, is: ΛΟΥΤΡΟΠΟΛΗ

There is a word in the GNT that may have been used for a place similar to a spa: ΛΟΥΤΡΟΝ, although this deals more with washing, bathing. I wonder if more female services were also performed at the ΛΟΥΤΡΟΝ, such as on the face, like putting a mud pack on her face and 2 cucumber slices on each eye :). This is just a wild guess; I'm stretching here.

This may be a reply off list since I don't think it appears in biblical Greek, but I am not as familiar with the LXXs.

I know this can be improved.
