Grammar on Verbs

Post by mmorris » June 21st, 2020, 12:16 pm

What is the best book that goes in depth on verbs and tenses outside the indicative and also the significance.

I have found most books don’t go to far in depth.

Thanks,

Albert Rijksbaron has some publications on Greek Verbs. Not sure what happened to my pfd of his chapter in the Cambridge Grammar 2019. M. Aubrey can fill you in on details. Don't rush out and purchase the Cambridge Grammar 2019. That's not what you want. Monographs on verbs are in plentiful supply and you don't need to pay for most of them. The biggest problem is weeding out what isn't worth reading.

However, the Cambridge Grammar is still a very good thing to have.

  • As Stirling noted, Rijksbaron's introduction to the Greek Verb is arguably the best overview there is for the verb generally: https://amzn.to/3hUekHm
  • Willmot is good, but you'll need to wade through what is and what isn't relevant to the 1st century: https://amzn.to/313PnU4
There's a lot of other good stuff, but it grows progressively more obscure for NT & related lit from here.

It depends on what level and what you've already read, but Mike's suggestions are a good start.
