Rom 3:21-22: Ellipse of verb

Post by moon jung »

Rom 3:21-22:

21 NUNI DE XWRIS NOMOU DIKAIOSUNH QEOU PEFANERWTAI,
....
22 DIKAIOSUNH DE QEOU DIA PISTEWS IHSOU XRISTOU
EIS PANTAS TOUS PISTEUONTAS.

The question is whether the verb PEFANERWTAI of verse 21 is omitted in verse 22.

I have always read as follows:

Now apart from law the righteousness of God has appeared,...,
that is, the righteousness of God from faith[fullness] of Jesus Christ,
to all who believe.

But some exegete takes it to mean:

Now apart from law the righteousness of God has appeared,...,
that is, the righteousness of God from faith[fullness] of Jesus Christ has appeared
to all who believe.

In the first case, TO ALL WHO BELIEVE is part the sentence which begins with NOW.

I like it better. But is there reason , why the second parsing is intended?
For example, the particle DE can connect only sentence with another sentence?

Hi, I found an answer to my question, while scanning the thick grammar book by A. T. Robertson, p. 1184.

Sometimes a word is repeated with DE for special emphasis, as DIKAISUNH in Ro 3:22( cf. 9:30).

9:30:

EQNH TA MH DIWKONTA DIKAIOSUNHN KATELABEN DIKAISUNHN, DIKAISUNHN DE THN EK PISTEWS.

So, if DE can introduce a phrase as Rom 9:30, the answer to my question is obvious.
