Future Perfect forms in LXX?

Post by RDecker »

Does anyone know of any FuturePerfect forms in the LXX other than Jer 38:34; Lev 13:45; Hos 12:1; Joel 4:16?

The LXX database used by Accordance doesn't use a FuturePerfect tag (these are all tagged as futures).

(= Heb 8:11, where Accordance *does* tag it as "futPerf.")

I haven't done a search to look for them. BUT -- this calls attention to the problem with tagged texts. It's fallible human beings that do the tagging, and future perfects in ancient Greek are almost exclusively periphrastic; one might find them better by searching for perfect participles in proximity to forms of εἶναι. I seem to recall that there are only three inflected future perfects in classical Attic literature: ἑστήξω (ἱστάναι), κεκλήσομαι (καλεῖν) and one more, perhaps ἑστήξεται. But these inflected future perfects are rare enough in classical Attic; they are likely to be non-existent in later Greek unless in Atticizing literature of the later 1st and 2nd centuries.
(Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

Very true. And it's not to hard to search for the periphrastic form. I was trying to identify all the (very rare) finite forms that are future perfect by morphology. I think the 4 I listed are valid examples of such, but they are the only ones I know of (other than the one NT quote of one of the LXX forms).

Here are the search results from Logos. It doesn't have forms of οιδα, which it parses as futures:

Job 19:7
Lamentations 3:8
Psalms of Solomon 5:8

Thanks Mark. That's helpful. Interesting that almost all of these are a single form, κεκραξομαι. I'd guess, though I haven't tried to verify this, that it's a "frozen" form.

Your Logos list also illustrates Carl's point regarding the limitations of tagged texts since not only is the form of οἰδα missing but also κεκλήσεται in Lev 13:45.

Right, Logos parses κεκλήσεται in Lev 13:45 as a future passive, although they have it right in Hosea 12:1. I've reported the mistake.

These reduplicated forms of κράζω are not future perfects; they are simply futures. According to LSJ:
fut. κεκράξομαι Eup.1, Ar.Eq.285, 487, Ra.258, Men.Sam.204, κεκραγήσομαι Hsch. s.v. κεκραγήσει later κράξω AP11.141 (Lucill.), Ev.Luc.19.40
and BDAG:
fut. κράξω and κεκράξομαι (B-D-F §77; W-S. §13, 2; Mlt. 154; Rob. 361)

But which is the "mistake"? Just because it's reduplicated doesn't mean it's perfect, especially with kappa.
LSJ says
Pass., fut. κεκλήσομαι Il.3.138, A.Th.698 (lyr.), Pr.840, etc.
BDAG says
2 fut. 3 sg. κεκλήσεται Lev 13:45; Hos 12:1

Hmmm. Most interesting. I'll have to do some work on that tomorrow. Thanks for the note.

The LXX database used by Accordance doesn't use a FuturePerfect tag (these are all tagged as futures).
Accordance is right.
In Conybeare & Stock's listing of future perfects in the LXX, all are periphrastic.
Conybeare & Stock, 56 wrote:FUTURE PERFECT
Gen. 43:9, 44:32 ἡμαρτηκὼς ἔσομαι.
2 K. [2 Sam.] 22:3: Is. 12:2, 8:17 πεποιθὼς ἔσομαι (fut. simp. in force).
Sir. 7:25 ἔσῃ τετελεκώς.
Is. 58:14 ἔσῃ πεποιθώς.
Is. 17:7, 22:24 πεποιθὼς ἔσται.
Is. 32:3 ἔσονται πεποιθότες.
Gen. 41:36 ἔσται . . .
Thackeray had a few more things to say about future perfects:
Καλέω fut. καλέσω, §20,1 (iii); fut. perf. pass. κεκλήσομαι only as a variant for κληθήσομαι in Ex. xii. 16 A, Hos. xi. 12 BQ,
Cf. §15,3 aug. in ἐπαρεκάλουν, ἐπροσκέκληται, §16,8: Vb. ad].
Κράζω ... fut. κεκράζομαι as in Att. (with v.l. κράξομαι: not κράξω of N.T.), §20,3, cf. 15,3
but on p. 194, calls this a future perfect.
Thackeray says θνήσκω appears in the future perfect 3 times in 4 Macc.
Robertson, p. 361 wrote:The future perfect was always a very rare tense with only two active forms of any frequency, ἑστήξω and τεθνήξω. The middle and passive could make a better showing. In Heb. 8:11 εἰδήσουσιν is probably future active (from LXX), and in Lu. 19:40 some MSS., but not אBL (rejected by W. H.), give κεκράξονται (cf. LXX).
Goodwin, 2.13 wrote: When the perfect is used in the sense of a present (49), the future perfect is its regular future; as κεκλήσομαι, μεμνήσομαι, ἀφεστήξω, I shall be named, I shall remember, I shall withdraw, etc.
In many other verbs, the future perfect differs very slightly, if at all, from an ordinary future. Thus πεπράσομαι is the regular future passive of πιπράσκω. Still, where there is another future, the future perfect is generally more emphatic.
