Example of 3rd decl., velar-stem, ending in χ

Post by Mike Baber »

Hello,

Could anyone offer an example of a 3rd declension noun derived from a velar-stem ending in the letter χ?

Other examples:
- σάρξ, from velar-stem ending in κ: σάρκ-
- αἴξ, from velar-stem ending in γ: αἰγ-

Just need a velar-stem ending in χ.

Thanks in advance!

θριξ, σαρδονυξ, and ψιξ are the only ones I can think of.

σαρδόνυξ, -υχος, ὁ sardonyx
θρίξ, τριχός, ἡ, dat. pl. θριξίν hair [Grassmann's law states that if an aspirated consonant is followed by another aspirated consonant in the next syllable, the first one loses the aspiration. ]
ψίξ , ψιχός, ὁ and ἡ, nom. pl. ψῖχες crumb

Where do you remember ψίξ from?

If you mean where I read it, it would most likely be Mt. 15:27 or Lk. 16:21

Learning diminutive forms.

Do you learn the diminutive as a form of the regular form of a noun, perhaps like the compartive and superlative are (not) learnt as a form of the adjective.

[I ask because I did learn vocabulary in that way a very long time ago (in the 1980's), but later learnt the regular and diminutive forms separately]

I learned them separately. To be honest, I might never have known there was a difference if I hadn't explored a lexicon instead of vocabulary lists.

I see this is a typo in the first and online editions. I wonder if it has been fixed in the recent book edition.
