Mk. 6.14

Post by victor.vicveh »

Hello i have a question about this text, the noun

Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων on mark, a participle. I found that this noun appears 14
ὁ Βαπτιστής form the first declension, i know this noun can be translate it has “the one that baptize”

but what is the function on this text Mk. 6.14 and what is the correct translation of it?

"Καὶ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἡρῴδης, φανερὸν γὰρ ἐγένετο τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔλεγον [21] ὅτι Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐνεργοῦσιν αἱ δυνάμεις ἐν αὐτῷ. " (Mar 6:14)

Should it be “the one that baptized” (past tense)

hope you can guide me on this, thanks.

I'd avoid the tense issue by going with "John the baptizer."

Rephrasing the question: What is the function of ὁ βαπτίζων in Mk. 6.14.

ὁ βαπτίζων functions as a substantive more or less equivalent to Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστὴς, see H.B. Swete on Mk 1:4.

For substantive participles, the "tense" is less important than the action characterized by using the participle. A present participle will suggest that the action is contemporaneous to the action of the main verb, an aorist that the action precedes that of the main verb.

"correct translation" is an ambiguous issue - do you want a "wooden literal" translation, or a "dynamic translation" - or something in between ?
Wooden literal would be "the one (masculine) baptizing"
