Bill Mounce on the subjunctive

Post by cwconrad »

In today's "Monday with Mounce" blog entry, "My Second Thoughts about Subjunctives in Purpose Clauses (Monday with Mounce 117)" (http://www.koinoniablog.net/2011/10/mon ... e-117.html), ὁ διδάκαλος says, "I am starting to seriously question whether we should rethink the standard presentation of the subjunctive, specifically in ἵνα clauses." There is some interesting discussion here. If there were a comments section, I would recommend that he look at Margaret Sim's dissertation on ἵνα and ὅτι, Marking Thought and Talk in New Testament Greek: New Light from Linguistics on the Particles 'hina' and 'hoti'
οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

...but be prepared to wait some time. At least my last comment (on http://www.billmounce.com/blog/10-24-20 ... nite-verbs) took about 5 days or so to appear. I'm not in a hurry, just impatient :) Many people who follow a blog read it right after the main post but don't come back to it afterwards, so interesting discussion may be missed.

Frustrating isn't it. I turned off moderation for a while and just got slammed with porn and advertisements hidden in the links. Sorry. I just upgraded my version of Drupal and I have a much easier way to moderate and approve. I approve everything except the porn/ads tuff.
