List,

I have been studying 1 Cor 12. I have a couple of questions about some things I have observed.

In the description of the spiritual gifts, Paul speaks of the diversity and unity connected with them. He goes on to describe the distribution of those gifts first to one and then to another.

...hEKSTWi DE DIDOTAI H FANERWSIS TOU PNEUMATAOS PROS TO SUMFERON hWi MEN GAR DIA TOU PNEUMATOS DIDOTAI LOGOS SOFIAS ALLWi DE LOGOS GNWSEWS KATA TOAUTO PNEUMAi hETERWi DE PISTIS EN TWi AUTWi PNEUMATI ALlWi DE CARISMATA IAMATWN EN TWi AUTWi PNEUMATI ALLWi DE ENERGHMATA DUNMEWN ALLWi DE PROFHTWN ALLWi DE DIAKRISEIS PNEUMATWN hETERWi DE YEVN GLWSSWN ALLWi DE ERMHVEIA GLWSSWN...

This is the first time I have noticed that Paul uses the synonyms hETERWi and ALLWi here. Also, has anyone noticed the near symmetry? Paul speaks of a word of wisdom and then says to another (ALLWi) is given a word of knowledge and then to another (hETERWi) faith.... Throughout he continues to use ALLWi, until near the end when in he uses hETERWi (to another various tongues) and then ALLWi (to another interpretation of tongues).

It looks something like this:

...ALLWi ...hETERWi ....ALLWi ....ALLWi ....ALLWi ....ALLWi ...hETERWi ....ALLWi

Anyone out there brave enough to speculate on this and it significance?
What would the purpose be in using the different synonyms, if not for style?
