Jeramy,

You have already received several good suggestions (particularly Porter's
'Idioms,' also Wallace). If you would like something on the web (and don't
mind reading tedious stuff like dissertations!), you might find this page
of interest. There are more detailed pages linked from it. If you are at
'novice level' (first year or so), then just file this reference for study
later (along with the large tomes by Porter and Fanning on verbal
aspect--though this diss. is not of their caliber, it is closer to that
level than 'Idioms,' etc.).
