the students come in realizing that they are indeed going to approach the 
language in a new way, as opposed to the memory-intensive course of study 
that normally marks the first-year course.  A significant change of name 
also tends to prevent much of the sophomoric attitude by some that they 
basically know it all.  It makes that first day of the second year a lot 
more enjoyable. >>

I appreciate your reply, and I think the above makes a lot of sense. I 
apologize for my knee-jerk reaction to your use of the term "beginning," I 
should have paid more attention to its context.
