I would like to bypass the more general question of the nature of
hendiadys, and address the meaning of the specific phrase in question,
hUDATOS KAI PNEUMATOS. It seems to me that we dealt with the more
general question at some length about a month back (or was that on
C-Paul?)
JDG Dunn's 1970 work Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Westminster) does a
pretty good job on this phrase. I would suggest that anyone interested
in its meaning take a look at chapter 2 of his book. In brief, his
conclusion is that the two elements cannot be hendiadys, or even
multiple references to a common referent. In fact, the water is being
contrasted to spirit, rather than in any way joined to it.
