As for the infinitive, it is used in both Greek and English to express
purpose. As for your translations from "DBY," the English word "might" in
"DBY" appears to be suggesting tentativeness: "he might take away our sins"
(1 Jn 3:5 DBY); and "he might undo the works of the devil" (1 Jn 3:8 DBY),
and not purpose.
