"There's my first problem. The usage of AUQAIRETOS as "of his own choice" in 2 Corinthians 8:17 is perfectly intelligible, but I don't see how it bears upon the sense of AUQENTEIN in 1 Tim 2:12. Are there any other instances of AUQENTEIN in the sense "act independently" with an ablatival genitive of the one of whom one acts independently in Christian or non-Christian Greek?"
I don't have the resources to answer this question directly; however, lexicographer Moeris noted that authentein was the koine equivalent of autodikein and George Knight III mentioned that Carney translated a passage in Lydus, Magistratibus to mean "of his own authority" (George Knight III, "Authentew in Reference to 'Women in 1 Timothy 2:12," New Testament Studies, vol 30).
I'm not certain what the context of this passage is since Knight did not tell where it was found so I don't know if it used an ablatival genitive or not. Perhaps someone else is acquainted with this text.
