What I had to say about GAR is mostly a matter of observation and teaching
experience, although I have checked grammars. Smyth's grammar has a
valuable section on the particles, ##2769-3003. The major reference on the
matter is J.D. Denniston's classic _The Greek Particles_, first published
in 1949, second edition (I think) in 1952 or 53. You might also find worth
looking at Denniston's little book _Greek Prose Style_, published in 1952.
All of Denniston's work was published at Oxford U.P.
