I have read Benjamin Raymond's question and Mary Pendergraft's fine reply.
One might add that the "u" of the English word represents omicron/upsilon in
the Greek word. Especially, however, Benjamin, look at the entry as well in
Lampe's Patristic Greek Lexicon; this is a nice survey of the uses of the
term among the Greek Church Fathers as well as among the "gnostics."
