Shepherd 7,1

Bart,
I think the meaning in the context is "neglect her." I checked BAGD, and it
had under EAW, 2, for this very passage (HV 2,3,1 [that's the reference in
the Loeb ed.]), the definition "leave someone to herself." Kirsopp Lake in
his translation in the Loeb ed. translates, " ... no longer bear a grudge
against your children, nor neglect your sister, that they may be cleansed
from their former sins." This is borne out by the context, for the text goes
on to say, "But you, Hermas, had great troubles of your own because of the
transgressions of your family, because you did not pay attention to them
(hOTI OUK EMELHSEN SOI PERI AUTWN). But you neglected them (ALLA
PARENEQUMHQHS) and became entangled in their evil deeds." In light of the
fact that Hermas had not "paid attention" to the sins of his family, and had
"neglected" them, it seems reasonable in the context to conclude that Hermas
was being commanded not to "neglect" his sister/wife. Hope this has some
value.
God bless,
Steve LoVullo
