I think one of the problems we in America have difficulty relating to
animal sacrifice is because we get our meat from the store and tend to
forget where it came from. Yes, it comes from slaughtered animals.
Some sacrificial ceremonies allowed the people to eat the meat while God
got the smell. Other sacrifices were holocausts where God gets everything.
To see just how far we Westerners have come away from even awareness of
where food comes from, just take the case of a local boy scout troop whose
leaders asked for volunteers to raise certain animals and then be taught
how to slaughter them and then eat the meat so that children could learn
where food comes from. There was a hue and cry in the media, and the
project was dropped. I don't see any reason why boy scouts shouldn't
learn by experience where food comes from.
